MUSEUM SEEKS FINANCIAL LIFELINE
While government is battling lack of forex, a possible source of the much needed forex is wrestling underfunding.
Almost all museums in the country have cried out about lack of funds, and Chichiri Museum located in the Commercial City of Blantyre is no difference.
Chichiri museum officer in charge Robert Kambembwe said museums play a crucial role in preservation of culture and promotion of tourism in the country.
“The challenges that we are facing now are different as government has other priorities. Maybe we just need to wake up and align ourselves with the present realities. The museum needs more capital investments in order to play its role effectively”, he said.
He further said the funding the museum receives is not adequate, adding that it is pleasing when private entities such as Amaryllis Hotel and Malawi institute of Tourism (MIT) put initiatives to uplift their service delivery.
Malawi has six museums which includes Chichiri opened in 1966, Top Mandala in Blantyre, Lake Malawi in Mangochi, Mtengatenga Postal hut in Chiradzulu, Karonga and Mzuzu museums.
