FEES HIKE VS RIGHT TO EDUCATION

  The tuition fee of public universities in Malawi has gone up dramatically this year which will prohibit the right to education to needy student The development comes after some public universities have pegged their fees per academic year at MWK 650,000 or more.                    Speaking in an interview with one of the students at MUBAS Deborah Banda said, it is unfair decision to raise fees from K350,000 to K650,000 at the most public universities as most of the students cannot afford to pay such a huge amount of money. “I completely ignore fee adjustment in public universities as most of my fellow students come from poor economic ground and most of our parents have financial pressure due to prevailing economic conditions in Malawi.”, said Banda. MUSEUM SEEKS FINANCIAL LIFELINE

  While government is battling lack of forex, a possible source of the much needed forex is wrestling underfunding. Almost all museums in the country have cried out about lack of funds, and Chichiri Museum located in the Commercial City of Blantyre is no difference. Chichiri museum officer in charge Robert Kambembwe said museums play a crucial role in preservation of culture and  promotion of tourism in the country. “The challenges that we are facing now are different as government has other priorities. Maybe we just need to wake up and align ourselves with the present realities. The museum needs more capital investments in order to play its role effectively”, he said. CLASSROOM SHORTAGE A THREAT TO LEARNING AT CHICHIRI CAMPUS

The Malawi University of Business and Applied sciences (MUBAS) Chichiri campus is facing challenges in their learning processes due to limited number of classroom spaces available. The Chichiri campus harbors generic, continuing Education Centre (CEC) And the Malawi Institute of Legal Education (MILE) students. This creates more pressure because the number of classroom spaces available do not equal to the students.  Most of our classes are postponed because we usually find big classes which can occupy our class of about 80 students that they are already in use by other classes, said Catherine Hassan year 2 Generic student. “it is pathetic and unfair game at this recognizable university to see students scrambling for classes each and every single day because of few classroom spaces available, so it is my appeal to the management together with the government to take an action,” said Hassan.
